How to File Natural Nails (without causing damage)

Filing your natural nails seems simple until you realise that the way you file can make or break their strength. Done correctly, filing helps your nails stay smooth, strong, and beautifully shaped. Done incorrectly, it can lead to peeling, splitting, or breakage.

Let’s go through, step-by-step, how to file your natural nails safely and effectively, just like a professional would at The Nail & Beauty Lounge, Poulton-le-Fylde.

1. Choose the Right Nail File

Not all files are created equal. The wrong file can cause micro-tears in the nail, leading to peeling or weakness.

How to choose the right one:

  • Avoid metal files - they’re too harsh for natural nails.

  • Use a 180-grit emery board for general shaping.

  • Use a 240-grit file for fine detailing or fragile nails.

  • Glass or crystal files are great for a smooth finish and minimal damage.

If you regularly have builder gel or acrylic overlays, you’ll need a lower grit, but for natural nails, finer is always better.

2. Prep Your Nails First

Before you start filing, make sure your nails are clean, dry and free from polish or oils.

How to prepare properly:

  • Wash your hands and dry them completely.

  • Remove any polish, oils, or lotions.

  • Push back your cuticles

Filing when nails are wet can cause bending and splitting, so always file when dry.

3. Decide on Your Shape

Your nail shape should complement your natural nail growth and lifestyle.

Common shapes:

  • Round or oval are best for shorter nails or low-maintenance care.

  • Squoval (square with soft edges) are strong, flattering, and durable.

  • Almond are elegant and elongating but can require more maintenance.

Tip: If your nails break easily, avoid sharp corners and stick to a soft, rounded edge for strength.

4. File in One Direction Only

This is the golden rule of nail filing — and one of the biggest mistakes people make at home. Filing back and forth creates tiny fractures along the nail edge which can lead to peeling and weakness. It also feels horrid to lots of people!

How to file correctly:

  • If the nails are all different lengths, start by clipping with nail clippers. Use tiny ‘snips’ rather than forcing the nail into an unnatural shape by putting the entire nail in the clippers.

  • Hold your file at a slight angle under the edge of your nail. Not too much that you file the thickness.

  • Start from one side and move gently toward the centre in one direction.

  • Lift the file away and return to the starting point for the next stroke.

  • Avoid sawing motions. Slow, controlled filing gives the smoothest result.

If they feel rough, you’re using the wrong grit file. The pale side of an emery board is perfect for refining the shape.

5. Be Gentle and Take Your Time

Over-filing can thin out your nails. You don’t need to apply much pressure, let the grit do the work.

Pro tip: If your nails are uneven, file gradually and check the shape as you go. Step back and look at your hands to make sure all nails match in length and curve.

6. Smooth and Seal the Edges

Once you’ve shaped your nails, seal the edges to prevent future splitting.

How to do it:

  • Use a fine-grit (240+) file or buffer to lightly smooth the tips.

  • Run a soft buffer gently underneath the free edge to remove any rough spots.

  • This step helps prevents snags.

7. Finish with Hydration

Finishing with hydration and moisture keeps nails healthy and flexible.

How to finish properly:

  • Massage oil or hydrating drops into the nail and surrounding skin.

  • Follow with a nourishing hand cream to lock in moisture.

Healthy nails are flexible nails. Well-hydrated, moisturised nails are less likely to split or break.

8. Maintain Regularly

The more consistently you maintain your nails, the less filing they’ll need each time.
File once a week or as needed to maintain your chosen shape.

If you notice uneven growth, peeling, or weakness, consider a professional manicure or overlay to strengthen your natural nails while they grow.
