Help! There’s Something Green on My Nails.

What Is It and What Should I Do?

If you’ve just removed your gel or acrylic nails and noticed a green patch on your natural nail, don’t panic. Unfortunately, it’s more common than you might think. At The Nail & Beauty Lounge, we often see other salons clients who come in with ‘green nails’ and aren’t sure whether it’s serious, infectious, or something that will go away on its own.

This guide will walk you through exactly what it is, why it happens and what to do next, step- by- step.

1. What is the green colour on my nail?

That green stain is usually caused by a type of bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It’s sometimes referred to as a ‘greenie.’
Bacteria thrives in moist environments and can grow between your natural nail and any product sitting on top, such as gel polish, builder gel or acrylic.

When oxygen can’t get to the area, the bacteria multiply and release pigments that stain the nail plate green or greenish-yellow.

2. How Does It Happen?

A green nail typically appears when:

  • There’s a small lift or gap between your natural nail and enhancement.

  • Water or moisture gets trapped under your nail product.

  • Nails are not fully dried or prepped before application.

  • The enhancement or overlay has been worn for too long without maintenance.

  • Tools or files have been used at home without sanitisation.

  • Nails are too long and imbalanced and water has entered.

  • The application was too thick or too thin and has lifted.

Even the tiniest lifting or air pocket can allow moisture in and that’s all the bacteria need to grow.

3. Is It Dangerous?

While it’s usually not serious, it does need attention. If ignored, the bacteria can spread, cause discomfort or lead to nail separation.

You should never cover a green nail with more gel, acrylic or polish as this will trap the bacteria further and make it worse.

If the nail looks very dark, painful, or swollen, you should seek advice from your GP or a pharmacist, as it could be more than a surface-level infection.

4. What Should I Do If My Nail Is Green?

Here’s a practical step-by-step guide to deal with it safely:

  1. Remove any nail product - Gently file off any remaining gel or enhancement to expose the nail fully. If it’s builder gel or acrylic, we recommend professional removal to avoid further damage.

  2. Clean the area -Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

  3. Disinfect - Wipe the nail with an antiseptic or isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) to kill bacteria.

  4. Keep it dry - Avoid moisture and wear gloves when doing household tasks.

  5. Avoid covering the nail - Do not reapply any product or polish until the colour has completely grown out.

  6. Monitor the colour – The green stain will usually grow out with the natural nail over a few weeks if the area is kept clean and dry.

5. When to See a Professional

If the stain doesn’t fade, appears to be spreading, or you notice any signs of soreness, swelling or discharge, book an appointment with the doctor straight away.

At The Nail & Beauty Lounge, our trained, qualified nail technicians can assess the condition safely, remove products correctly, and give your nails the chance to recover naturally.

We also use strict hygiene protocols and high-quality professional prep systems to help prevent this from happening in the future.

6. How to Prevent Green Nails in the Future

Prevention is simple with a few key habits:

  • Always book regular maintenance every 2–3 weeks to keep your nails in good condition. Book before you leave so you get the slot you want and you don’t end up weeks late because you couldn’t get in.

  • Avoid DIY infills at home.

  • Keep your hands clean and dry whenever possible. Wear rubber gloves for wet jobs

  • Trust only professional, sanitised tools and products.

A consistent, professional routine makes all the difference in nail health and appearance.
